Zelda Game & Watch: make room for three early adventures

A dedicated Zelda object makes sense when its particular older games are the attraction, with Link’s Awakening’s original Game Boy version kept clear.

A small collection with a definite point of view

Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda is appealing because its selection is narrow enough to describe. Nintendo lists The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link and Link’s Awakening, with Game & Watch: Vermin alongside them. For someone who wants to spend time with those early adventures, the dedicated object has a purpose beyond a familiar emblem on a shelf. For someone hoping for a particular later Zelda, the name alone is a poor reason to choose it.

The Link’s Awakening you are returning to

Nintendo’s hardware description specifies the original 1993 Game Boy version. That distinction matters more than a general promise of nostalgia: remembering a later colour edition or a modern remake does not make this the same experience. Zelda II also brings side-scrolling action into the selection. Think of the collection as several specific ways the series once played, rather than three interchangeable portions of one modern adventure.

The clock is part of the object’s character

The interactive clock lets you take control of Link, while the timer uses Zelda II battles. These give the device something to do between longer sessions; they do not need to become an argument that every desk requires another screen. Nintendo also describes using the packaging for display. That makes a play-and-display intention quite concrete, provided you actually like the little time features rather than merely feeling obliged to keep a commemorative device visible.

Choose your first return visit

Name the included game you would start before deciding where the object will stand. Revisit that version’s official description or footage if your memory comes from another release. If the answer is the original Link’s Awakening or an interest in Zelda II’s different structure, this collection has an identifiable draw. If the answer is only that a favourite later hero should be somewhere on the device, choose a more accurate route back to that game.
