You do not need the box to choose this reading format
For a reader starting AKIRA, the newer individual hardcovers deserve attention before committing to a complete set. Kodansha explicitly says their translation and lettering come from the 35th Anniversary box edition. They also retain right-to-left reading and Otomo’s Japanese hand-drawn sound effects. Choosing one volume first is therefore not simply choosing an unrelated older English presentation.
The named Volume 1 is ISBN 9781646511341, in a 7-by-10-inch casewrap hardcover. If your plan is to read a volume and decide when to continue, this route makes that pace possible. The comparison rests on those documented features; a shared translation does not establish identical paper or binding.
What the 35th Anniversary package actually adds
The box, ISBN 9781632364616, combines all six hardcover story volumes with the hardcover Akira Club art book and a pill-design patch. That is a persuasive reason for someone who specifically wants both the complete manga and the accompanying art volume in one package. It is a less persuasive reason if the real wish is only to begin the story.
Akira Club should remain a separate item in that decision. Six story volumes and an additional art book are not seven consecutive instalments of the manga. Equally, the individual Volume 1 description does not promise the box’s extra objects. Decide whether those objects are part of your interest before treating the package as the necessary version.
Choose the commitment you want to make
Start with an individual hardcover when the reading itself is still an open question, or when collecting gradually is the point. Choose the anniversary package when the six-volume work and Akira Club are already the intended collection. If you own part of the story, count those copies as overlap rather than assuming a new package makes them new reading. The useful distinction is how much of this particular work you want to bring home together.
