The reference is part of the pleasure
The Pokémon Company’s 2023 announcement connects Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat to Van Gogh’s Self-portrait with Grey Felt Hat from 1887. The collaboration celebrated the museum’s fiftieth anniversary and introduced new audiences to the artist; it also linked his interest in Japanese prints with Pokémon’s Japanese cultural background. That gives the image a route beyond recognising a favourite character. A collector can follow the reference back to the painting and ask what the new portrait borrows, rather than treating a hat as a new Pokémon identity.
A historical object without an invented sales story
The official promotional-card table identifies the card as SVP085. The museum presentation ran from 2023 into January 2024, and its original gift-with-purchase arrangements belong to that history. They do not establish a current giveaway, stock or resale value. Someone drawn to this particular meeting of character culture and museum art has a coherent collecting interest even without a rarity claim. Keep the issue’s name and artistic reference together: that is enough to explain why the image matters to you.
