Two numbers answer different questions
The current US specification gives a controller maximum of 500 panels, but lists 28 Triangles or 21 Hexagons for a 42 W power supply. These are separate limits. A proposed all-Triangle layout exceeding that stated supply capacity cannot be justified by pointing to the larger controller figure. Ask Nanoleaf to specify the suitable power arrangement for the exact expansion; this is not an electrical installation design.
Buy another shape for the composition
Shapes Expansion Packs make the most sense for someone who already enjoys a working Shapes installation and wants a particular extension: another branch, a more deliberate edge, or a different balance of geometric shapes. The manufacturer documents mixing Hexagons, Triangles and Mini Triangles. The worthwhile feature is a modular composition that can change, rather than a collection that must reach an impressive panel total.
Choose the missing component
Nanoleaf explicitly says an Expansion Pack needs an existing Shapes controller and sufficient power capacity. Its accessories guidance also makes compatibility dependent on family and generation. The useful next purchase may be the appropriate power accessory rather than another controller. For mixed-shape layouts, use the manufacturer's arrangement guidance instead of guessing from the single-shape counts. This modular route is most rewarding when changing the connected geometry is part of the pleasure; someone who only wants a steady pool of light has a simpler requirement.
