Starting Point or Turning Point: which Miyazaki period do you want to understand?

The two English books offer different periods to enter. Choose an interest in the filmmaker’s beginnings or the later international moment, rather than expecting either to be a film-image catalogue.

Begin with a question behind the films

Someone who loves a Miyazaki film can want more than another view of its familiar images. Starting Point: 1979–1996 is described by VIZ as a collection of essays, interviews and memoir, reaching into childhood, animation thinking and the founding of Studio Ghibli. It is the clearer invitation when the question is how this filmmaker’s ideas and working circumstances began to take shape.

That is a different purchase from a book chosen primarily for a sequence of colour stills or background paintings. If the desired evening is browsing those images, a specifically documented film artbook remains a better direction. Starting Point’s attraction here is the kind of reading its publisher describes, not a promise to reproduce a film visually.

The later period changes the point of entry

Turning Point: 1997–2008 brings the reader to the years VIZ describes through Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo and wider international recognition. A reader whose curiosity begins with that period may prefer to enter there instead of first following the earlier book merely because Starting sounds obligatory.

The dates organise a choice of context; they are not a complete chapter index. A film’s release year alone cannot tell you where every discussion of its development appears. Someone seeking one particular essay or production detail should check that item, rather than turn the two period labels into mutually exclusive lists of films.

Choose the exact reading object

The hardcover records considered here are Starting Point ISBN 9781421505947 and Turning Point ISBN 9781421560908. VIZ also lists other formats. Keep the selected format attached to any physical comparison instead of transferring a page count from one version to another.

Choose Starting Point for the documented origins, animation ideas and studio beginnings. Choose Turning Point when the later films and their international moment are the question you want to stay with. Wanting both is a reason to explore two periods, not proof that one book replaces the other. For the first book on the table, a specific curiosity gives a more welcoming route than the duty to complete a creator’s shelf.
