Two invitations into the same world

A Lord of the Rings name on the box does not decide what the group will actually do together. Ravensburger's Adventure Book offers eight chapters through the trilogy, using Story cards to complete Challenges and advance. EXIT: Shadows Over Middle-earth asks the group to solve Gandalf's tasks through a sequence of riddles. Choose between wanting to move through a shared board-game journey and wanting to pull apart a bounded puzzle experience.

The Adventure Book equipment includes the book-shaped game board, seven character miniatures and a Corruption Track. Those objects support a different table presence from EXIT, whose rules expressly begin with a riddle booklet and decoder disk and say it has no game board. Neither box needs to be judged by whether it contains more things resembling the other.

EXIT expects the paper to participate

The exact Shadows Over Middle-earth rules permit writing on, folding and tearing materials, sometimes requiring it. They explicitly describe the game as one-use: after solving it, the riddles are known and the materials are no longer needed. That makes sense for a group that wants one unfolding discovery. It is a poor match for a gift recipient who expects every supplied piece to remain pristine for the next household.

The group follows the riddles in order, enters codes and uses answer cards to learn how to continue. Progressive help cards are part of the supplied system, so being stuck does not automatically require searching the internet and exposing later answers. There is room to choose how much help to use without turning the purchase into a promise of solving everything unaided.

Choose what happens after the lid opens

Adventure Book is the clearer candidate when the attraction is chapter progression, character miniatures and shared challenges on a physical board. EXIT suits a group happy to handle the booklet as puzzle material and finish a particular mystery. Its optional helper app can provide a timer and atmosphere, but the rules also permit an ordinary watch; a new app installation is not the deciding requirement.

If passing the game on intact is central, EXIT's explicit one-use design is enough to rule it out. That does not establish a blanket reset guarantee for Adventure Book. Choose the chapter format on its documented merits, and let its own instructions settle any later reuse plan. The difference to enjoy is the activity the group wants now: progressing through chapters or discovering what the next riddle asks of the paper.
