Two LEGO typewriters: a place for a real letter, or something to rebuild?

21327 and 31169 share a familiar silhouette, but paper handling and alternative builds give them different purposes.

A letter waiting on the desk

A sheet held in a typewriter can be the whole point of a display: a welcome note, a favourite passage or a letter someone wants to keep in view. LEGO Ideas Typewriter 21327 has a platen roller that accepts real paper. Its central typebar rises when a letter key is pressed, linked to a carriage that moves across the model. Those movements make the old machine’s silhouette more than a static outline.

The included letter from Thomas Kirk Kristiansen is supplied in 43 language versions. That is a ready-made display option, rather than a requirement to invent something before the model has a place on the desk. Printed key characters and the black-and-red fabric ribbon are details of the model; they should not be read as a promise that it will produce printed correspondence.

The floral model has a different second act

Creator 3in1 Typewriter with Flowers 31169 uses a brick-built sheet of paper. LEGO describes a moving keyboard and platen, with four brick flowers around the typewriter. Its other possibilities are a flower-decorated keytar or a flowerpot with a pen and notebook. They are rebuilds using the same bricks, so the three scenes cannot stand beside one another at the same time.

That makes the smaller model interesting when changing what sits on the shelf is part of the attraction. Its phrase stickers decorate the builds; they are a different proposition from feeding a personal paper letter through 21327.

Choose the activity that follows the build

Choose 21327 when the mechanical typewriter and a real-paper display are what you want to return to. Choose 31169 when flowers, a compact toy scene and the option to rebuild are more appealing. Neither the larger piece count nor the more adult-looking shape establishes a better fit for every reader. The useful question is whether you want to keep one letter in view or keep changing the object around it.
