Split Pad Pro or Compact: choose the outline, then account for the missing features

Compact keeps full-size controls. The shared TV-mode attachment also makes the smaller model a different choice from simply “less Pro.”

Split Pad Pro or Compact: choose the outline, then account for the missing features

Compact does not mean tiny buttons

HORI describes the Split Pad Compact with full-size analog sticks, buttons and D-pad in a compact form. The Pro instead emphasises its larger grip and controls. That makes the outline and grip arrangement the meaningful comparison, rather than assuming the Compact shrinks every input.

Consider where the palms and fingers will sit on the attached handheld. If the larger Pro form is part of the appeal, choose it for that reason. If a more compact overall outline is the goal, the Compact preserves the documented full-size controls. Neither product description can decide personal comfort from hand size alone.

Both give up the same named Joy-Con functions

The named Pro and Compact pages exclude motion controls, HD Rumble, NFC and the IR camera. Rear assignable controls and Turbo do not replace those functions. For a game that depends on one of them, keeping the appropriate Joy-Con available can matter more than choosing between these two shapes.

These pages describe the original Nintendo Switch family; the Compact explicitly names Switch OLED too. Do not turn that into an automatic Switch 2 compatibility promise.

TV mode is not a Pro-only reason

The separate NSW-427U Split Pad Attachment works with either Pro or Compact, creating a wired TV-mode arrangement with a headset jack and audio controls. If moving between handheld and that wired setup is important, both pad forms have a documented accessory route.

The attachment does not include the pads and does not work with Joy-Con. Buy it as the middle piece of a known Split Pad setup, not as a complete controller on its own. With that package boundary settled, return to the actual choice: the larger Pro outline or Compact’s smaller body, while accepting the same named feature omissions.
