GOLDEN SoFlat or Fluid: the finish is part of the colour choice

A flat graphic field and a layered glaze are different painting aims. These two flowing acrylic ranges should not be chosen from a shared colour name alone.

GOLDEN SoFlat or Fluid: the finish is part of the colour choice
SANJIESAN original concept scene, not a product photograph.

For a flat character graphic, start with SoFlat

SoFlat is the more directly documented candidate for an opaque, matte colour field: a stylised emblem, a graphic background or a flat painted character study. GOLDEN makes that combination of low sheen, opacity and leveling the purpose of the range. If those qualities are the point, choosing it is more specific than simply buying acrylic paint in the desired hue.

For layered colour, Fluid has a different job

Fluid Acrylics are positioned for flowing fine brushwork, glazing and staining, among other uses. If the image is meant to build through visible layers rather than become a uniform matte field, that role is a better starting point. Check the exact colour’s opacity; “Fluid” does not mean every pigment is transparent.

Nor is Fluid merely another paint watered down. GOLDEN describes its pigment-loaded binder and lower viscosity as a formulation choice. That matters when selecting the product, not as a reason to improvise a thinning formula.

A matching colour name is not a matching surface

GOLDEN explains that SoFlat’s matting solids and formulation can change how a pigment appears beside another line. Compare an appropriate sample when the same colour must sit next to an existing painted part. A familiar name is a useful starting reference, not a promise that the dried surfaces will match.

Account for the finish after the finish

If a later topcoat is part of the project, include it in the sample decision. GOLDEN notes that varnishing changes SoFlat’s very low sheen; a matte varnish is not automatically equally matte. Choose SoFlat for its intended graphic surface, or Fluid for the intended layering behaviour, with the final coated appearance considered before buying a whole palette.
