More than a colour change
Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons is a 2021 fifth-edition sourcebook with gem dragons, lair maps and tools for dragon-focused encounters. The official contemporary preview names amethyst, crystal, emerald, sapphire and topaz, and presents psionic abilities, including telepathy, as a shared point of distinction. That premise can change the kind of scene a group imagines. A dragon does not have to announce itself only through a visible threat at the far end of a cavern.
One original table proposal
Imagine, as an original scenario rather than a published adventure summary, that the party receives a question before it sees the speaker. The dragon wants a disputed memory examined, not a treasure returned. Now the first decisions concern who answers, what information the group volunteers and whether it agrees on the account. The concept draws on telepathic communication; the actual range, timing and mechanical effects still belong to the chosen creature’s rules. A story prompt is not permission to give every gem dragon an unlimited ability.
Choose a sourcebook when you want to build
This book is a promising choice for a Dungeon Master who enjoys turning creature ideas into a campaign role: witness, negotiator, rival or dangerous ally. Someone seeking a ready-to-run sequence with all scenes already connected may prefer a specific adventure. Keep the edition clear when planning with current rules. The useful outcome is a dragon whose presence changes what the players discuss and decide, with the encounter mechanics resolved in the table’s actual ruleset.
