An existing LCD gives SL a defined place
Calibrite identifies Display SL as its standard-luminance sensor for current LCDs, with PROFILER software and USB-C plus a USB-A adapter. For a creator using a supported conventional LCD, that is a specific starting point. The word “creative” alone is not a reason to select the more elaborate model.
Pro HL has a more specific reason than “professional”
Pro HL explicitly names mini-LED, OLED and Apple XDR displays, with a high-luminance sensor capable of measuring up to 3,000 nits. That is a concrete reason to consider it when choosing a tool for one of those panels. The measurement ceiling is not a recommended illustration-editing luminance and not a reason to replace a working display with a brighter one.
Buy the measurement tool for the work it can actually do
The current SL and Pro HL pages both list Quick Check, Validation and Uniformity Check in their PROFILER software descriptions. Those function names alone do not distinguish the two models. Make the decision around the actual screen and the documented sensor support: Pro HL explicitly covers the newer panel types above, while SL gives a supported conventional LCD a defined route. A more capable measuring device should solve a display task you have, rather than become a badge attached to the desk.
