A Facecam Neo or MK.2 gift starts with the cable and mounting position

Keep the recipient’s USB route and intended camera position in the plan before comparing headline video modes.

Ask where the camera will actually live

A camera for a fixed monitor and one moved between workspaces create different cable questions. Before choosing a Facecam gift, ask where the computer’s accessible port is and whether the camera stays on a screen or uses another mount. This can be settled without asking the recipient to design an entire studio. A product photograph cannot tell you whether a fixed cable reaches around their actual monitor arm or where a hub will sit.

Neo has a fixed cable to account for

Facecam Neo’s official page lists a fixed 140-centimetre USB-C 2.0 cable and an included monitor mount with a quarter-inch mounting thread. It says a Type-A connection needs an adapter that is not included. That makes the practical gift question quite specific: does this cable and port arrangement work at the intended position? Include any separately verified adapter requirement in the plan instead of treating every laptop socket as interchangeable merely because the camera is USB.

MK.2 is a different documented interface

Elgato’s support comparison identifies MK.2 with a USB 3.0 Type-C interface, while Neo has a fixed Type-C cable. It also distinguishes MK.2’s compressed and uncompressed formats from Neo’s compressed output. Those are reasons to check the recipient’s intended capture application and available connection, not evidence that every video call benefits from the more elaborate route. A connector shape alone does not establish the computer’s usable USB capability or the application’s selected camera mode.

Neither model supplies the missing microphone

The same official comparison marks both cameras as having no microphone. A recipient who expects an all-in-one replacement for a laptop’s camera and audio input therefore needs a separate sound plan. That may already be their preferred headset; it does not automatically mean another purchase. Write down which existing microphone they intend to select. This single check can prevent a well-chosen camera from becoming a confusing gift when the first session has a picture but an unexpected audio source.

Use the extra mode only for a named task

The comparison lists both models at 1080p60, with an additional 720p120 option for MK.2. A specific supported creative capture task can make that difference relevant; an ordinary call may not use it. Choose from the intended mount, cable, host and application route first. Then confirm the useful mode rather than treating a larger number as a universal benefit. A gift is complete when its recipient has a coherent installation plan, not when its specification list looks the longest.
