A new CATAN 5–6-player box does not automatically require a new base game

Begin with the box you already have

If you own an older English-language CATAN and want five or six people at the table, a sixth-edition extension does not automatically mean replacing the base game. CATAN’s current compatibility page says previous and current English editions can be used together. That positive statement matters: the right question is which components and visual changes need attention, rather than assuming a new edition number invalidates every older box.

Compatibility does not make all components identical

The publisher identifies changed card artwork and backs, slightly larger wooden roads, and purple replacing brown as an additional player colour. It also notes that some accessories may not match because of component size or design. These distinctions can matter even when the games combine. Check the actual card combination before deciding whether opaque matching sleeves or replacement cards are needed; do not buy either remedy simply because a newer cover looks different.

Use the language boundary correctly

That compatibility statement is about English editions. CATAN’s licensee page separately warns that the English edition is not compatible with other language editions. Therefore an inexpensive extension in another printed language is a different question, not an exception you can infer from the English comparison. If the language or publisher on an offer is unclear, resolve it with the seller or the relevant official publisher before selecting the box.

The current rulebook changes the evening

The 2025 five-to-six-player rulebook requires most base-game components and uses paired-player turns, replacing the older special building phase. It is an addition to a game, not a self-contained six-person starter. Before the first gathering, let the group read the same revision. Combining an old remembered turn sequence with the new player markers can create confusion that an additional purchase will not solve.

Replace only a named missing requirement

Make three decisions in order: confirm the actual language edition, identify any card-back or accessory mismatch, and agree on the current five-to-six-player rules. If those checks leave no missing base components, a new base purchase needs a separate reason. If a component is missing, name it precisely when asking support. Keep the full base-game title, printed language and selected rulebook revision together when explaining the intended combination to the next player. This is a case where reading a compatibility statement can shorten a shopping list rather than lengthen it.
