A Spitfire reference photo is not a decal inventory

The B and C suffixes on Airfix's A01071 identify different documented markings. Pick the actual box before planning its finish.

Begin with the aircraft you want to depict

An appealing Spitfire photograph can set the direction for a model, but it does not establish what markings arrive in a particular box. The useful link is an exact kit code and its published scheme. Airfix's A01071C is a 1:72 Mk.Ia with one listed scheme: P9386, flown by Squadron Leader B. Lane of No. 19 Squadron in September 1940.

If P9386 is your intended subject, that identification gives you a concrete starting point. If the reference shows another aircraft, the shared Spitfire name is not enough to assume the supplied decals will reproduce it.

One letter changes the documented subject

Airfix's A01071B page instead identifies N3290, GR-U, of No. 92 Squadron in 1940. The difference is not a claim that one boxing is more accurate or enjoyable. It is a change in the named scheme that a buyer can verify before committing to a finish.

For a second-hand box or a shop photograph, ask for the complete product code including its suffix and a clear view of the scheme information. A listing that abbreviates both versions to A01071 leaves out the detail needed for this decision.

Keep the painting plan separate from the supplied sheet

The A01071C page lists the plastic kit, instructions, painting guide and decal sheet. It also lists paints separately; a colour suggestion is not evidence that paint bottles are included. Settle the identity of the actual box first, then use its own guide to plan the work.

That order leaves room for a deliberate alternative scheme later. It simply avoids beginning with an unrelated finished image and discovering halfway through that the expected aircraft codes were never part of the chosen boxing.
